Molly J. Coye, MD, MPH, Founder and CEO
Dr. Molly Joel Coye
is founder and CEO of the Health Technology Center (HealthTech), a non-profit
education and research organization established in 2000 to advance the use of
beneficial technologies in promoting healthier people and communities.
Today HealthTech provides technology
forecasts, decision-making tools, and expert learning networks for 45 Partner
organizations and for foundations and public agencies. HealthTech’s Partners
include nearly 25 percent of the nation’s hospital capacity, as well as the
country’s leading nonprofit health plans, the Veterans Health Administration
and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, which together cover more than half
of all insured Americans.
Dr. Coye has extensive experience in both the public and
private sectors. She served as Commissioner of Health for the State of New
Jersey and Director of the California Department of Health Services, in
addition to heading the Division of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins School
of Hygiene and Public Health, leading marketing and product development for
interactive health communication and disease management at HealthDesk Corp,
serving as Executive Vice President for the Good Samaritan Health System, and
directing The Lewin Group’s West Coast office.
As a member of the Institute of Medicine, Dr. Coye
co-authored the reports To Err is Human and Crossing the
Quality Chasm, chaired the Committee on Access to Insurance for
Children, and co-chaired the Committee on Patient Safety Data Standards.
Dr. Coye is Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the
Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), one of the largest and
most innovative nonprofit organizations working in international health. She
has served on the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association and
the American Public Health Association, and is a member of the Board of
Directors of Aetna, Inc, a member of the Advisory Council for the Health
Evolution Partners Innovation Network, and a member of the Board of Directors
of the Angel Island Foundation. Dr. Coye was a founding board member of The
California Endowment, the largest private health care philanthropy in
California, and served for eight years as a member of the Board of Directors of
the China Medical Board.
Dr. Coye holds M.D.
and M.P.H. degrees from Johns Hopkins University and is board certified by the
American College of Preventive Medicine. She also received an M.A. in Chinese
History from Stanford University, and is the author of two books on Chinese
history.
Steven DeMello, Executive Director and Senior Advisor
Steve
brings to HealthTech over 30 years of experience in hospital
operations, strategic planning, systems management and consulting. His
work includes serving as Senior Vice President California Healthcare
System, President and COO of Alliance Home Care Management, Inc., and
Principal at the global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney. Most
recently, Steve served as chief operating officer of a major consumer
Internet company. He received a BA in Economics from Claremont McKenna
College, and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Andrew Broderick, Director of Research and Forecasting
Andrew Broderick has more than ten years market research, project management, and strategic planning experience at SRI International. During this time he led the research, analysis, and writing of reports on a broad range of health-care technology and market issues, developed and authored technology roadmaps offering commercial assessments on emerging science and technology areas in the life sciences, as well as supported individual clients with business-opportunity searches, technology and market assessments, and new-strategy development on projects relating to health care. Before joining SRI, Andrew spent several years with a non-government organization focusing on international health and development issues around HIV/AIDS and TB in West and Central Africa. Andrew has also spent several years in Asia, with assignments in the Peoples Republic of China, Japan, and Hong Kong in financial services and education. Andrew holds a M.A. in economics and geography from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and a masters degree in business administration from San Francisco State University.
Valerie Steinmetz, Manager of Research and Product Development
Valerie joins HealthTech from UC Berkeley where she was a research assistant for multiple projects on visual attention. Valerie's previous work includes associate at the Hermosa Beach Free Clinic's HIV Hotline, associate for UC Berkeley's Graduate Student Instructor ESL testing program and an internship at UC Berkeley's Tang Center Radiology Department. Valerie received three degrees in Psychology, Public Health, and Molecular and Cell Biology, with an emphasis in Cell and Developmental Biology.
Aaron Mintz, Manager of IT and Senior Researcher
Aaron brings to HealthTech a diverse background in IT and health care. His experiences include desktop and web based software development for Federal Express, clinical research and database design for the University of Tennessee Cancer Institute, and website development for the MayView Community Health Center, where he served on the Executive Board. Aaron received a B.S. in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University with a concentration in natural language. During his time at Stanford Aaron was heavily involved with Camp Kesem, a camp for children whose parents have/had cancer, where he served as Administrative Coordinator and co-founded the Camp Kesem Outdoor Leadership Program.
Ange Wang, Senior Researcher
Ange joins HealthTech from management consulting firm Bain & Company, where she worked in the financial services, media, and private equity industries. At Bain, she performed numerous analyses, conducted due diligence and customer interviews, and worked with clients on high-level strategy cases. Prior to Bain, Ange graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BSE in Bioengineering and minors in math and psychology. While at UPenn, Ange conducted social science research on mental illness, as well as lab research on cancer DNA. She also studied marine biology as a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) fellow at the University of Southern California.
Jean Armas, Researcher
Prior to joining HealthTech, Jean was a research assistant for a type 2 diabetes program at the Stanford University Patient Education Research Center, which develops and evaluates online and community-based self-help workshops for patients living with chronic conditions. In addition to her research duties, she also handled program coordination, training, community outreach and patient education. Her experience also includes a clinical research associate internship in Emergency Medicine at the University of California Davis Medical Center and a research associate internship with a University of California San Francisco study focused on quality of life and decision-making for women living with noncanceous uterine conditions. Jean received her B.A. in Economics from San Francisco State University.
Neeraja Penumetcha, Researcher
Neeraja brings to HealthTech a background in engineering and healthcare. Before joining HealthTech, she worked for a non-profit foundation in India setting up a telemedicine program in rural areas. Neeraja received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin followed by an M.S.E. in biomedical engineering from the Johns Hopkins University. While at Johns Hopkins, she researched and developed image processing algorithms at the Center for Imaging Science.
Margaret Whelly, Office and HR Manager
Margaret has over 15 years experience as an Office/HR manager and Executive Assistant in both the private and non-profit sector as well as running her own business. Before coming to HealthTech in 2007 she worked with the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation for five years.
Julie Bates, Assistant to Molly Coye, CEO
Julie has 15 years of experience supporting executive teams in the technology industry. She also owned her own word processing business for 10 years. She is currently attending the UC Berkeley Extension with a goal of completing the Project Management Certificate Program. She is an avid cyclist, competing at the local, national and international level.
Senior Advisor Biographies
Joyce Berger, RN, MPH, Senior Advisor
Joyce Berger leads research and development of the Technology Planning Tools for HealthTech. She has had extensive experience in hospital and health system operations and the management of complex projects. She has been with the Health Technology Center since it’s inception and works on general research; she has also led the Healthcare Environments of the Future Working Group. Previously, as a consultant to Kaiser Permanente on the Templates 2000 project, Joyce managed 46 clinician and staff work groups, which developed national facility planning tools for the future development of Kaiser hospitals and ambulatory services. This process included technology planning and development of forecasting tools. Joyce has more than ten years experience with Kaiser Permanente, holding positions as Medical Group Administrator and Hospital Administrator, later moving to Area Manager, Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of the California Division North, and Managing Director of Kaiser’s International Consulting Group. Her experience also includes CEO of an inner city public hospital and Executive Director of a Community Clinic. Joyce holds degrees from the University of Alberta and University of California at Berkeley.
Barbara Harvath, BA, RN, Senior Advisor
Before joining Health Tech, Ms. Harvath ran her own consulting business specializing in preparing healthcare systems for emerging technologies and reengineering workflow related to technology adoption. Her work includes directing the Emerging Medical Technologies team for the Sisters of Mercy Health System a 19 hospital system, in St. Louis, MO and running the epidemiology programs for the Betty Ford Center and Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. As a Director of Strategic Quality Management Consulting for Quorum Health Resources in Brentwood, TN, she consulted in the areas of Performance Improvement, Operations Improvement, Regulatory and Accreditation Compliance and Customer Service Improvement for their 270 managed hospitals. Ms. Harvath worked in clinical nursing for over 10 years before moving into administrative roles at North Bay Medical Center in Fairfield, CA. Ms. Harvath has a nursing degree from Solano College and a BA in Public Service Administration from UC Davis. Her education includes a congressional internship in healthcare public policy.
David Lindeman, Ph.D., Senior Advisor
David A. Lindeman, Ph.D. is Director of the SCAN-HealthTech Center for Technology and Aging and Senior Advisor to HealthTech for gerontology and geriatrics. Dr. Lindeman has worked in the field of aging and long-term care for 30 years as a health services researcher and administrator. He has conducted interdisciplinary applied research studies, developed innovative community-based and residential programs for older adults, designed gerontological education and dissemination programs, and been active in long-term care public policy. Dr. Lindeman most recently was the Vice President and founder of the Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging in Evanston, IL where he was responsible for developing and evaluating evidence-based programs, demonstrations, education and dissemination initiatives that focused on: 1) promoting wellness for older adults, 2) enhancing the senior living workforce, 3) empowering family caregivers, and 4) creating effective memory support interventions.
Thomas C. Tinstman, MD, Senior Advisor
Thomas C. Tinstman, MD, serves as HealthTech's Information Technology Advisor. Dr. Tinstman is an independent consultant specializing in change management. His expertise in process redesign and his extensive knowledge of technology are tools he uses to advise health care delivery organizations on improving safety, efficacy, cost, and satisfaction for the clinician and patient in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Tinstman was the Executive Director for Clinical Information Systems at University of California Davis Health System (UCDHS) in Sacramento, California, from 2001 until January, 2007. In this role, Dr. Tinstman was responsible for information systems strategy, implementing and operating all clinical systems and Health Information Management. Prior to joining UCDHS, Dr. Tinstman was the CMO at Cerner Corporation for six years. Dr. Tinstman served as Director of Medical Informatics at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Concurrent with his appointment at the University of Texas, Dr. Tinstman was Associate Medical Director for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Dr. Tinstman practiced in Omaha, Nebraska, for seventeen years, during which time he also served as CEO of a major medical group for three years. From 1989 - 1993, Dr. Tinstman served on the Patient Focused Care Steering Committee of Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, which focused on reengineering the patient care process. Dr. Tinstman earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska and his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He completed post-graduate training in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
